Building on a wooded mountain lot comes with real challenges. The terrain is uneven, the views are worth protecting, and every decision - from materials to railing style - has to work with the landscape, not against it. That's exactly the kind of build we love.
This one was up on Town Mountain in Asheville. The homeowner wanted a deck that could handle the elements without demanding constant upkeep - no staining, no sealing, no worrying about rot or splinters. We went with Trex composite decking, which checks all of those boxes. It holds up well in mountain weather and keeps its look year after year without a lot of fuss.
The cable railing system was a deliberate choice too. It keeps sightlines open so the surrounding trees and mountain views stay the focus. We also built in a custom built-in bench that doubles as a visual anchor for the upper platform - functional and clean-looking at the same time. The elevated framing below was built to handle the slope of the site, which required some real structural planning to get right.
What we ended up with is a multi-level outdoor living space that feels like it belongs on that hillside. The covered structure alongside the deck adds shade and shelter without closing things off. It's the kind of outdoor carpentry work that takes a property and makes it feel complete - a place you actually want to spend time in, not just look at from inside the house.
If you've got a sloped lot, mountain property, or just a space that needs more thought than a basic deck kit can offer, this is the kind of build we do regularly across the Asheville area. Every site is different, and we plan accordingly.
